Father's Day at Double Cabin, Absaroka Mountains

On Father's Day, we went to a place that we go every year, which happens to be one of my favorite places on the planet: Double Cabin Campground. To get there you drive about 17 miles down the Horse Creek road out of Dubois up into the Absaroka Mountains. The road dead-ends in a valley where two glacial rivers meet. It's wide and shallow and you wouldn't expect good fishing, but we usually catch something.

We've been going there for years and we we always stay in the campground. We are almost always the only ones in the campground. It's not for the faint of heart, as the place is infested with grizzly bears. We've never had a problem but the first time we camped there, the Wyoming Game and Fish was trying to trap a bear out of the campground.

This year we got to the campground late and set up the tent in the dark. In the meantime, the kids are tired and hungry and I'm also trying to scrounge up dinner. But one of them said (and I can't remember which one), "this is the best camping trip ever!" Wow, I love kids, we hadn't even done anything 'fun' yet.
I do think one of the highlights this year (for them at least) was letting them ride around in the back of the pickup on the dirt roads. Remember when our parents let us ride around town that way? At least mine did, growing up in Texas....
